Is it worth staying near the Vatican?

If St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums are high on your list, yes. You can be at the basilica when it opens, join an early-entry museum tour without a long transfer and see the square empty in the evening. The area around the Vatican is also calmer than the historic centre, and hotels are often better value for their size.

The trade-off: the Colosseum and the Roman Forum are on the other side of the city. With Metro Line A from Ottaviano, you reach the Spanish Steps and Termini quickly, but the ancient sites take a change of line or a longer walk.

The best areas to stay near St. Peter's Square

From closest to furthest, with the pros and cons of each.

Borgo

The old quarter between St. Peter's Square and Castel Sant'Angelo. You cannot get closer, and the narrow lanes have a village feel. Many small guesthouses, but restaurants close to the Vatican can be touristy, and it gets quiet at night.

Prati

The elegant 19th-century district north of the Vatican, with wide streets, good shopping on Via Cola di Rienzo and plenty of local restaurants. Two metro stops, Ottaviano and Lepanto. For most visitors, the best all-round choice.

Aurelio

The residential area west and south of the Vatican walls. Hotels are often larger and cheaper, some with views of the dome, but the evenings are quiet and the centre is further away.

Centro Storico

Around Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, across the Tiber. About 20 to 25 minutes on foot to St. Peter's via Ponte Sant'Angelo, and in the heart of everything else. The most expensive option.

Trastevere and other alternatives

Trastevere, south along the river, is the most atmospheric neighbourhood in Rome, with cobbled lanes and lively evenings. The walk to the Vatican takes about half an hour, and regional trains on the FL3 and FL5 lines link Trastevere station with Roma San Pietro in a few minutes. Expect noise at night in the busiest streets.

Religious guesthouses run by convents and religious orders are common around the Vatican. They are often simple, clean and good value, sometimes with a garden or a terrace. Check the rules before you book: some have a curfew or keep their reception closed late at night.

Near Termini you find the most hotels at every price, and Metro Line A takes you to Ottaviano in around 15 minutes. It is practical for airport trains, but the station area is the least charming base in Rome. More in our guide on how to get to St. Peter's Square.
